Taiwan - Land of an Economic Miracle - Another Land of  Beauty

From soaring mountaintops reaching 3,000 meters to a curving cliff-studded coastline, Taiwan is that large island located off the southeastern coast of mainland China.  It is also known as Formosa from Portuguese meaning 'beautiful island'.  To Taiwan's northeast are the main islands of Japan, and the Philippines lie to its south.  It is a mountainous island with gently rolling plains to the west that are home to most of Taiwan's population.  Taiwan is the world's fourth highest island.

By nature, Taiwanese people are friendly, passionate and hospitable.  Taiwan's population exceeds 24 million with 98% of the people of Han Chinese ethnicity.  Around 70% of the total population are related to those who migrated from the southeast of mainland China, with 2% being Taiwanese aborgines.  Most of the people of Taiwan speak both Mandarin and Taiwanese Hokkien.

Many religions are openly practiced from various Christian faiths to Taoism and Buddhism.  There are over 14,993 temples in Taiwan, approximately one place of worship per 1,500 residents.  Most aborigines  have converted to Christianity.

Baseball is the national sport in Taiwan.  Family reunions reveal round tables and red envelopes.  Traditional festivals in Taiwan are as rich and colorful as its landscape.  The most famous is the 'Sky Lantern' festival where thousands of 4-foot-high lanterns soar upward into the sky all at once.  The 'Snow in May' tung blossom season in Hakka communities is a must-see.

One of Taiwans greatest attractions is the National Palace Museum, which houses more than 650,000 pieces of Chinese art and objects, considered one of the greatest cultural collections in the world. Tainan is the oldest city in Taiwan.  Taroko Gorge is considered the most attractive region of Taiwan.  Sun Moon Lake is also one of Taiwan's loveliest regions.  Many cities and towns around the country have what is called an 'old street'.  It's no secret that Taiwan's cuisine is world-class.  It also has the world's highest density of butterfly species.

Taiwan   is one of the Four Asian Tigers.   It is the Land of an Economic Miracle, and another Land of Beauty.
